Dirty Don's 1997 Cobra AKA Trollbra

Recommended Posts

Hello all, this is my 1997 Cobra. I have absolutely no idea what this build will end up as. But for now, I'm after some road track time.

This is the day I bought it! 30k on the clock, and in "mint" condition (or so I thought).

So, at this point, I was very happy with it. Then second gear started acting up about 4 months into ownership. So, I bought a t56 magnum from American Powertrain. What a fiasco that ended up being, they screwed me around for quite a while.

Here is my invoice

Here is the trans, specifically the shifter, the day I got it

The shifter, adjusts in 45 degree increments

See where the simply ground off the tremec logo? Not impressed:lol:

Everything else that came with the kit

Needless to say, I was not happy with the shifter. I let it sit that way, waiting for the rest of the order.

Got my bellhousing from them. I was happy

Then I realized this! they sent me the wrong bellhousing! So far, they dropped the ball on the entire order, so i asked for my money back on everything except for the trans.

see the problem? Its for a t5 trans...Not impressed

THIS IS THE RIGHT ONE!

After sending everything back, I started collecting parts!

This picture shows how it is adjusted front to back. I was unaware of this, but it's a nice thing to have. (holy blurry batman:dw:)

Great starting point man! Like I said before its a great canvas to begin with. If you need help with anything lemme know!

Thanks dude, same goes for you!

Here begins the trans removal

Ok guys, here it is. I have the T-45 out.

So, I guess I'll go in order of what came out first

Driveshaft out. Pretty self explanatory, take the 4 bolts off the pinion flange (12mm 12 point), then slide it out of the back of the trans

DSCN05381_zps5fd4dcf6.jpg

This part was my favorite, removing the cat back.

DSCN05421_zpsbd7febcb.jpg

It shouldn't have been bad, but I ran into some wonderful workmanship such as this:

DSCN05391_zps453e2044.jpg

Yes, that is a washer welded to the outside of the hanger. And then to compound that, this:

DSCN05411_zps5917a02c.jpg

They welded the exhaust tip to the shaft that hangs it :bored:

On to the H-pipe. I had to make myself a custom O2 sensor wrench to remove the passenger side O2

DSCN05431_zpsa537c08c.jpg

I also had a ton of fun with the passenger side manifold flange bolts. But I got them out with a long extension and a swivel.

I used this for the install of my new clutch and flywheel.

How today is finishing. I can't find bolts to bolt the trans up :fm:. Guess I'm ordering some up:fart:

I wanted to go with the T56 Magnum, just couldn't talk myself into the price, so jealous!

Such a clean car too, and I want those Brembos!

It was a tax time impulse, that is for sure! Thanks!

Im keeping the new set, haven't decided on what to do with the other set though. They may make their way to my 5.9l limited grand cherokee this summer though. Because Racecar! :flame:

Thanks dude, im sure i will be calling upon some of you that live near by me eventually!

Got the Bell back in today, along with the starter. Also pushed out the bearing in my cc plates so that i can get them powder coated. Rear axle is going to DTS thursday for some 4.30 gears. Still have to order a few things, which will happen tomorrow. I will also be trying to get the trans in tomorrow. If everything goes as planned, and i have my bolts.

Am I crazy, or do I have a bastard child? As far as I can tell, the above picture is on a 94. But according to AJEs website, they should use the same crossmember (MU-7061)

There is a difference between the mounting location for the t45 transmission mount between gt and cobra. The cobra crossmember go straight across, whereas the gt (like the one pictured I believe) go back and across because the mount is further back.

Edit:I just realized you have done a t56 swap so this^ is probably not valid, sorry haha.

I am trying to do the swap. I am having crossmember issues.

basically, the crossmember SHOULD be rotated 180 degrees and line up perfectly, but my mounts are not even close.

"You don't use the crossmember from the T-56. You use your stock crossmember from the T-45. All you have to do is move the rear bolts to where the front bolts currently are, and drill two new holes for the front bolts. You will also need a conversion transmission mount. The cheapest place I found one was CJ Pony Parts."

what if you just flip it in place? so if you're looking at it from the rear, spin it 180* clockwise?

I've tried it in every possible way.. This crossmember just isn't going to work

Ordering it tomorrow, thanks man. You rock

Just realized that they want you to drill the frame... Not happening, I'll weld up a new crossmember. I have the technology

Gotta make some pucks to fit into the tubes that will be going on the end when I get to the shop Monday. This will allow me to bolt the ends in place, tack it all together, then pull it off and finish welding it. After that, I will take it to the shop to bore the tubes to fit the bushings. This will also make the bolt holes at the trans perpendicular with the tubes at the ends.

Ok guys, I need some help. Can anyone measure the distance from their trans tunnel to the center of their output shaft for me? Like this:

New tool!

The old one

The even older one that is new to me

post-341-13881837937435_thumb.jpg

Pretty much went from a tiny, flimsy little lathe to a decent size sturdy lathe. Hopefully this thing will be turning parts this weekend.

Also, I am contemplating pulling the t56, putting the t45 back in, getting my measurement, then starting back over. Unless I find the measurement before this weekend, that is now the plan.
