Orange 94's Track Build

Introducing my new project!
Track dedicated 2004 Mustang GT

I've been wanting a track dedicated car to beat on for awhile now. I was looking for an import, but came across this car and couldn't pass it up. Probably a really good car for me to track since I have knowledge of this chassis and parts are abundant/cheap.

The car runs and drives good, but the paint is ugly. After driving it for a bit I'm very happy with my purchase! Stutters a bit once in awhile, probably the bit of very very old gas in the tank. The 4.6 2v V8 is slow, but seems healthy and it's enough power to make it fun to beat on. The odometer displays only 92k KM, the interior looks like its in good shape. The entire car is in much better shape than what my 94 started as!

Modifications:
Throttle Body + Spacer
Cold Air
Shifter
X Pipe
Flow Master Cat Back
Upper And Lower Rear Control Arms
Subframe Connectors (Bolted in, will weld or remove)
Headlights
Taillights
Billet interior accessories
Gauge overlay
Eagle alloy 17" wheels (Dirty, but in great condition)
Chin spoiler
Mesh things

The car also came with (uninstalled) larger injectors, larger maf, parts transmission, stock headlights and stock taillights.

I plan on swapping the stock headlights and taillights back in. The aftermarket ones are probably the better ones I've seen, but I prefer the stock. The mesh screens on the car are getting removed. The gauge overlay is getting removed since its in MPH and its doesn't light up at night haha. I'll also be removing the aluminum interior overlays.

The car really just needs a paint job and it would be a sharp looking car! I'll be keeping it mostly as is for awhile and just focus on getting lots of seat time at the track! The only thing I'd like to do right away is reinforce the torque boxes, one of the upper boxes was repaired in the past. Its recommended to reinforce the boxes anyways to handle abuse, my 94 needs the boxes done too. I'll also go through the car and do some basic maintenance and cleaning. The plan is to keep this car simple and ugly for as long as possible, but i imagine I won't be able to resist picking away at it.

As for track, I'd like to try everything I can! Drag, autocross, road and possibly drift? I think my main focus will be autocross. Can't wait to beat on it!

Track car as in road course or drag strip?  Looks like it should be a fun project!

As in anything I can do!
Drag, autocross, road and possibly drift. Looking at getting studded tires for ice-x too haha.

This morning I went through the basics of the car. The rear tires were on backwards, so after I corrected that everything else was good. I took the car for a bit of a trip to watch some drifting and the car drove great! I took a couple quick pictures while I was out.

Once I got home I decided to start working on it.

Taillight swapped to stock
License plate lights hooked up with new LEDs
Fixed the trunk pop button
Headlights swapped to stock, removing all the goof angle light wiring was a bit of a pain
Grill removed, will need to order a mach1 grill delete + pony
Gauge overlays removed, there was a white cobra face under it. Still in miles, but Im pretty sure odometer is KM
Removed windshield decal

Couple pictures how the car currently looks

Looks 100% better with all the junk removed! I think to keep in theme with your 94, this thing should get a Torktech kit. Eaton all the things!

Torktech would be awesome, but I want to avoid all temptation on Frankenstein mods. Need to keep this one simple

So you can just switch license plates back and forth between cars??

14 days to register a car, but its needs a plate during that time period.

I may put the Works + Nittos on for a couple events, but those will be the 94's shoes. Maybe I'll eventually get some nice track wheels for this car, but right now I'm thinking I'll use what i have. The current 17 eagles with a sticky tire for drag, my silver 18 bullitts for autocross and I have some 16s on my 2000 mustang parts car that I could use for ICE-X if there are events during the winter.

Thank you!

Apparently I decided to jump into interior work.
Sorry about the cell pictures, didn't feel like getting my good camera dirty. I'll bring out an old DSLR to the shop next time for better progress pictures.

Started by removing the cheesy interior overlay... what a pain in the ass! It all eventually came off though.

I then decided to remove the seat covers. They were actually pretty decent covers, but I didn't want to slide around on leather. I tried to remove them nicely to try and sell them, but they ripped so I just ripped the other one off too. The cloth seats are actually in decent shape, should be nice after a good clean.

I then noticed some aftermarket interior lighting... and well one thing led to another and I tore things apart chasing after it. Some really um... interesting... wiring. Next task will be to remove the aftermarket lighting/wiring and remove the unnecessary stereo wiring. It doesn't look like it will be too bad to remove. I also swapped out the blue LED dome light for a white one, the blue light was really bugging me. I also have new LEDs coming to swap the horrible blue ones in the gauge cluster too.

I'm tempted to just gut the interior now, but I think I'll keep a full interior for awhile.

Car got its own plate yesterday for those who were bothered by the plate swap :P

Its pretty illegal down here in the states to do that, i think they were just looking out for you.  We get temporary plates or a temp registration papers until customized plates arrive in the mail or if the DMV was out of generic numbered plates.

Oh right! I think we can get those here too, but they're pointless. You have 14 days to register a car, but it needs insurance and a plate during that time. You might get pulled over, but you just show them the bill of sale and your insurance.

Who says that procrastination never pays off?

I got this car to replace the interior in my 94. I've been meaning to bring it to the crusher for many years now, but never got around to it. Well I've procrastinated long enough where I can use more parts from it!

Most of the parts will be spares for the track car, but a few parts can be used in the 94 and maybe dad's 56 project.

Our first task was to get the ol David Brown started to move the car. It ended up having a bad battery.

30168248426_dde47381e6_c.jpgIMG_9703 by Richard Brown, on Flickr

While waiting for that, I poked around in Grandpas shop. Barn yard find? It's been sitting there for at least as long as I've been alive. Sadly this car will continue to sit. It's my step great uncles and I don't think he'd ever be able to sell it for a responsible price, so it'll just rot. :(

30202432005_da2a7b98d7_c.jpgIMG_9709 by Richard Brown, on Flickr

Started to move the car. Then the tractor ran out of fuel, so we went for lunch. When we came back the rain had cleared so we just decided to tear it apart in the yard.

Pulled off:
-Rear bumper + crash bar
-Trunk + hinges
-Taillights
-Front bezel
-Lower v6 intake
-Doors
-Gas door and cap
-Varies harnesses

29906641220_796db24837_c.jpgIMG_9715 by Richard Brown, on Flickr

We then wanted to get the car onto the flat deck to take final parts off and have it ready to transport to the crusher. We tried to lift the entire car, but the tractor didn't have enough grunt. So we lifted the front on the trailer and pushed the rest on.

Pulled off:
-16" Wheels - perfect for winter tires if we have ICE-X events this year
-Gas tank cover
-Rear springs
-Steering rack

Did a bit more today. Installed the firewall adjuster and quadrant. I think I forgot to mention this car also came with a centerforce stage 3 clutch. It's orange, so that should make the car faster.

While installing the quadrant we found more aftermarket lights in the foot wells... Was able to remove the cheesy lighting and put the interior back together! :D I think the car is all de-riced now!

Man.... Fuuuuuuck that.  That blows.  I don't know how you Canucks do it.  We've got at least probably a month and a half left at minimum until it snows here and even that is too soon for me.

Typically around Halloween is the first major snow fall. Where I live the snow doesn't stay all winter, we get Chinooks  (warm wind) that melt everything occasionally. About 3 hours north there's snow all winter. I'm not sure what I'd prefer more haha, lots of wind that can get 100km/have or lots of snow.

Winter will be okay if I can ice race :)

Man I couldn't imagine the depression that would wash over me if I stepped out to that much snow this morning.  Hell I was irritated I had to look for my jacket in the back of my closet since it was 50 out when I went to work....

A few more parts!
Should be all I need to get the car where I'm happy enough.

29658926073_fe8d53ec51_b.jpgIMG_3625 by Richard Brown, on Flickr

First some new transmission oil to see if it improves shifting, seems to be common issue with the tr 3650 especially when cold. It seems like a ton of people report improvements with mobil synthetic, even though original manual says you're not suppose to use synthetic. I guess tremec did do some testing and now recommends it? Worth a try before digging into it further.

Black primer to paint the rear bumper to match the trunk. It'll look much better than it does now. Won't worry about making it look too pretty right now.

Mach 1 grill delete, since I removed the ugly mesh grill I needed something to fill the holes.

Sequential taillights. I didn't need these, but I always wanted them and refuse to swap the taillights in the 94. I got new bulbs to go in while I'm at it.

LED bulbs for the gauge cluster. A previous owner put in blue LEDs and they're extremely dull, cant see anything basically. I ordered a ton of them since I've had good luck with this company with the LED swap in the 94.

I also bought a bunch of extra clips since I've noticed a bunch missing on the car.

Grill installed. The fitment of the delete could be improved, might play around with it once I get some of the body parts fitting better. It looks good a million times better than the mesh grill though.

Sequential taillights installed.

I also painted the rear bumper a black primer. Much better!

Overall I think I'm happy with how the car looks now, not embarrassed to drive it haha. Can divert attention to mechanical work now.

Changed the transmission fluid, seems to have done the trick! Goes into first much easier and no more 1-2, 2-3 and R grind. Syncros seem happier with the correct fluid and level

Filled the transmission through the top, seemed much easier.

Unrelated, but the 56 project is starting to make progress. Dad ended up using a Granada style front end with sn95 brakes. He also figured out how to get power steering work - electric system from early 2000s GM SUVs. It install in the interior and he can adjust the assist level. Light weight, compact, simple and no leaking.

The car is definitely looking much, much better now. You could probably get some red vinyl cheap to overlay that clear 3rd brake light.

The '56 is looking pretty cool, I actually kinda dig the mismatched/rat look a bit. Not sure if that's the final plan for the paint, but it doesn't look half bad as is at least to put off paint and get the car running and driving.

I have a 3rd brake light from the parts car, just need to swap it.

I tried to convince him to just get it running and drive it as is, but for what he all has planned he might as well just do it all.
