Dragon Slayer - 1995 Mustang GT Build Thread - Now With 100 Percent More IRS

Recommended Posts

Car is just sitting at the moment apparently, my friend has changed jobs a few times within the last couple years and hasn't had extra money for the car.  I keep prodding him into messing with it again though...

So, after he let the car sit for nearly four years after all that work, I finally wound up buying it off of him Friday and got it tagged and moved over to my house on Monday.  Needs tires and a bunch of other stuff, but hopefully I can the tires done Friday and drive it to work Sunday or Monday and start figuring out what else it needs.  For now:

So I've got a few things done since the last post.  I got the negative battery cable replaced as well as drilled out the broken off hold down bolt and got a new battery hold down installed.  Tires have been replaced, wipers replaced, and windows cleaned up a bit.  Front driver's side export flare is back on as well as a new fender badge installed to cover up the mounting holes in the fender.  Rear seat delete is in and does quite things down a bit when idling around town but there's no real escaping the bullet mufflers and higher revs lol. Also got a replacement ashtray to plug the hole in the console and had to replace the speedometer gears as that was broken as well.  Installed a rearview mirror radar mount so my V1 can come along too now.  I know there's some crap I'm forgetting and some pictures I need to take, but I've driven it to work a couple times now (70-ish miles round trip) and it's done great so far.  In unfortunate news, the Cervinis stalker wing is splitting pretty bad and anything above 65 makes it want to starting splitting in half so I'm going to have to do something about another wing/spoiler soon but figuring out what to do about painting the replacement is going to be a pain as the paint is pretty faded and isn't even a factory color to begin with (was originally a black car, apparently).  I may just go ahead and get an S351 and get it painted Performance Red since that's what the car will be redone in eventually anyway and just deal with it being way glossier than the rest of the car for now, but I haven't decided yet...  Anyway, here's a few pictures for now until I get around to taking more recent ones:

So after seeing ReplicaR's Kaenen S351, I decide to go ahead and replace the Stalker that was on there (I'd been considering S351s for a while but didn't want a cheap one).  The Kaenen appears to be pretty decent quality and doesn't touch in the center like a lot of them do.  The fun part was going to be color matching as the car has an unknown color on it (originally a black car) and whatever it is has badly faded over the years.  The plan was to plastidip it for now until the rest of car was ready to be painted.  Turns out, flat HEMI Orange plastidip is damn close to whatever color this thing is now.  Old wing and it's cracks:

Trunk lid is rusting from a lack of seal between the wing and the trunk lid, will probably wind up replacing it at some point in the future:

New Kaenen S351 wing in HEMI Orange.  Ran out of spray so you can still see a bit of the black that it arrives in when looking at the underside in the rear but it works for now and isn't cracked:

S351 is a big improvement. Kudos.

Thanks!  Most things would have been an improvement over the cracked Cervinis... 🤣  $280 shipped from Kaenen for the S351!

i'm actually really surprised that cervini cracked like that.  never seen one of theirs do that before.  but the s351 is a better wing either way, no question.

As it turns out, if you let it sit still for 12 of the 17 years it's mounted to the car then weird things happen lol.😢

The rack developed a leak on the driver's side some time over the last couple weeks and poured all the fluid out a hole that I hadn't noticed in the boot.  Turns out there was also another hole in the passenger boot as well.  So instead of replacing the the seal  and boots (and the other seals and the inner tie rods while I was in there), the car got an 03-04 Cobra rack this morning.  No pictures, but I have an appointment to align it and then hopefully I finally get a chance to take it to the Dragon since I'm off the next week+ with work being closed.

Put it back in the air to take a little toe out of the passenger side for the ride to the alignment shop Thursday and got a quick Cobra rack picture:

And a bit of IRS porn for good measure lol:

whoa those are rear brembos too?  is that only for an IRS??

They're Front and Rear Brembos off a GT350.  The bracket is for putting GT350 front calipers on an S197.  I also happen to have a Vintage Venom kit for putting S197 GT500 calipers on an SN95.  I'm hoping the two together (not sure material the FTB brackets are, I'd like to weld them together if they're also steel lol) will let the GT350 brakes live on an SN95 or at least let me know how far off I am so I can make my own.  I'll have to make brackets for the rear, but that should be pretty easy since they aren't radial mount calipers and then have to sort out a hydraulic hand/parking brake from there.

i have a vintage venom kit on mine too so definitely interested in how you make this work.  i've been wanting to do rear brembos for years now to match so if you do end up making brackets, i'd be interested in a set myself.

In theory, the Vintage venom kit should put the mounting caliper mounting holes at the same location as the S197 and then the FTB bracket should bolt to that with the radial GT350 location.  Who knows how that's going to work in practice lol.  The rear should be easier since it's essentially just spacing it up a bit and determining how far in/out it needs to move.  Parking brake is easy enough with something similar to one of these:

Brackets showed up today. No idea what order the brackets will need to go on or which way they'll need to orient until I get a rotor for testing, but at least they bolt together. Also stuck a ruler in the shot for scale lol:

any plans for the master cylinder?

So, interestingly, the SN GT master cylinder and the S550 GT master cylinders are the same size.  The Ford kits to put GT350 brakes on other S550s don't change the master cylinder (can't find reliable info on the bore size of the GT350 Master Cylinder), so I'm going to stick with stock and see what happens since I'll be using the GT350 brakes front and rear.

New front rotors showed up today.  Now I've got the everything I need either here or ordered except for the rear rotors and a test wheel for the back.  Those can wait until winter since I'm still driving it to work a couple days a week lol.

those rotors are beautiful

They're also 30 pounds each lol.  The actual Ford parts are $280+each and these are aftermarket ones I got for $70-something each for mockup and initial testing.  19+ ones aren't drilled to stop cracking, but when these start to go I'll just buy some Girodiscs and save a few pounds in the process.

Is the plan for now.  I'll have a second set of the below 19x8.5s with All-Seasons for normal driving too lol:
