2001 Cobra Major Build Thread

Recommended Posts

Ok so I went through all my build thread (nearing 100 pages) on my forums and picked out the highlights. Long story but summary: bolt on engine blew back in 01/2011 while I was building up to do an eaton swap and forged bottom end since 2009. Had Racers Edge Tuning building it when they failed and didn't change the single use cam bolts and broke it through my valve cover on a "test drive" (among other problems and issues). Called and told me to pick it up that day or it would be parked in the street as they wouldn't be responsible. The owner told me $1,000 in labor and I had to provide replacement parts!!! So I picked it up and tried to work it out with him for 9 months. I'm pursuing legal action against the shop with a class action suit with others they have wronged. Ended up having to tow it to another shop to try and see how bad the damage was as we all knew the bolt cycled through the engine. They got it running by removing the busted cam bolt and installing all 4 new bolts and installing a couple gauges. Seeing that it was toast I took it in a few months later for a complete re-rebuild. This is the awesome results as performed by GTR High Performance and L & R Custom Engines. :)

Purchased brand new day 1 with 9 miles on the clock. June 15, 2001

Here is a first start up at the first shop before teh SC started making loud noises and had to be removed. They warped it when they welded the silencer holes.

Brought it home via AAA tow and the top wasnt working anymore so it got stuck out in a flash rain storm for a very short while.

Got it under my patio out back and sat there for several months while tried to get them to do the repair work they owed me.

I was hoping you'd post this build on here at some point! That mess with Racers Edge is absolute bullshit, best of luck in the class action...shops that do bad business need to feel the same pain they inflict on their unfortunate customers.

the first motor sure looked pretty! sucks it tanked in the way it did. good luck with the new engine~!

Thanks bro! Yea it was a sweet eaton swap. Just with all the work that needed to be done to get it running again it made best sense to revert back to 01 Cobra NA configuration and slap on a big SC! :)

While it was at the house I figured I could finally do some work on it.

Rear seat gutted, drivers side rear 1/4 window regulator replaced, vert top fixed (they removed the main fuse for it and didnt put it back) as they told me "it just stopped working". Serviced the vert top pump and topped it off with fluid, Installed my terminator folding mirrors and did a few other "things".

Gah at least I got to drive mine a bit before the motor tanked, you didn't even get seat time in it.  Such a shame, glad you've rebounded though!  Car looks excellent, really like those pullies lol, look pretty sick.

I have a couple of RET stories myself. I've never been impressed with them. In fact he's one of the reasons I started tuning my own car. Glad to see it's getting fixed though. I don't see many 01's anymore.

That really sucks about that shop screwing around with you, but it sounds like it's in good hands now and getting squared away.  Sweet Cobra.  It sounds real good in those burnout videos.  I was just thinking the other night I'd like to have a Cobra vert with a 4V to go with my pushrod Cobra coupe.  The blower looks great.  If it makes any funny whistling noises though, it is no good, and you should probably send it to me for disposal.

Thanks and sure, just pay the several thousand dollar shipping fee lol

What Vortech is that? Can't read the tag in the pic, sure is a beauty though!

It says "RACE" on the label lol. Seriously it does but its their V7 Ysi model

What are you planning to do with that Eaton swap?

Already sold most of it. Had it for sale for months

ham here I was hoping that vortech had an exhaust housing on the back side and not a belt pulley! should still make good power... for a supercharger?

Thanks and yea its a sc

A V7 YSi is definitely no slouch... on par with most things that run off exhaust pressure for sure!

That should make some serious power! :2thumb:

I like your power steering cooler. I've been looking into putting one back on my car lately. And that's the style I was thinking.

What are you aiming for boost wise?
