Kyle's Project 98 GT Saleen Replica/AutoX Build

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys. I considered cutting the springs but I don't really want to tear it all apart just to do it all again in another month or so. I think a drop will really help it pull off the yellow cobra r's. I think I'm just going with sportlines for now and should be able to have them ordered by the beginning of Sept. Here is a quick little PS of my exterior end goals. I still can't decide if I want to go to OEM corner lights though.

To all those saying to cut my springs... I caved in and did it. I'm going to do full MM coil overs over the winter so this is just to get me by until then. I took off 1.5 coils up front and a little over a coil in the rear

Much better! You should think about trying to get the underside of the lower grill to stay up. Im sure you could just screw some flat stock straight across or something like that.

Looking sharp! I may have a poster somewhere with a yellow GT on it. I'll let you know if I find it, I'll ship it out to ya if you want

That would be awesome! I could cover shipping if it's just laying around

just couldnt wait for the springs eh?  haha   looks much better though

Haha no sir I couldn't. Decided I'll save up and do coil overs over the winter instead of just settling on springs now

Yeah I really need to. I need to grab a heat gun and try to warm it up a little. I've tried pulling it up by hand and it's pretty stiff

I may know of another company that sells a really nice adjustable coilover kit that works great for that car.  Gives it one hell of a stance and ride quality:D

And the Ridetech coilovers are a true coilover as opposed to a sleeve over a strut like every other 94-04 mustang coilover out there, save for a few high end ones like KW's and the like.

Haven't updated this in a while since Ive done a few things. I ordered a saleen decal kit and threw that on and just recently installed some bilstein racecraft shocks and struts along with some H&R super sports

Haven't updated this in a while so Ill just throw everything in here to catch everyone up.

Im turning the car into a more autox/track oriented build so Ive spent some time working on the suspension and stripping weight. Still a lot to do!

Thanks guys!

Some progress has been made since my last update. I made it to 3 local autox's and the car has done great. The only thing holding me back is my cheap all season tires. Im planning to finish this season on them to get seat time and understand how to really drive the car and not rely on tires. The local CAM class is very competitive and is full of helpful people.

Here are some pictures and a small video of my first event with the car.

I also took off the s351 wing to do some cleaning and the rivnuts inserted in the wing decided to strip/spin so it probably wont be going back on..... So what do I decide to do? Build a custom autox/nascar style spoiler. Ive got my template made up and will be using 1/8" aluminum which should be ready to pick up on Monday. I need to order some support rods and figure out what kind of hing/bracket I will use to mount it to the trunk.

Finished product. I am pretty pleased with the end result. Autox is this weekend so I will be able to test it out and see if anything needs to be changed. I can upload more pics of the building process if anyone is interested.

@Kyle5.0, I would be interested in more pictures of the wing build if you wouldn't care to post some!

Let me know if you want any specific pictures. I realized I haven't take many detail shots of the final product

Bringing this back from the dead. Life has been getting pretty busy but Im still managing to get a little work done on the car and do some racing. Since the last update Ive done a few more suspension modifications and acquired another set of wheels. The motor is still running strong even with the tensioner/chain noise I was concerned with from the beginning. After this season my plans are to pull the entire timing system apart and replace everything.

The first thing I needed to do was get a set of decent tires since this was turning into a dedicated autox car. I went with Falken rt615k+'s in a 255/40/17. The shorter height helps with acceleration but Im looking to move to an 18 wheel in the near future for more tire options.

Next up was to redo the suspension to add some adjustability. I went with MM coilovers all around. Up front I also added an FTR bumpsteer kit and some repo Cobra 13" brakes.

MM Panhard Bar with MM coilovers on Koni SA's. The rear coilovers really helped dial out some of the understeer, Im very happy with the rear setup now.

Stifflers installed SFC's

Rebuilt rear with FRPP 3.73's and CF clutch packs. Makes up some for the weak 2v

And now for one of my favorite additions. I found a set of mint Forgeline RS's on CL pretty local to me for a great price. They polished up almost perfect, I dont think they had every been ran on a car before.

Only "power" modification that has been done is an OEM FRPP 70mm TB. My goal for this car is to make it "look" like it was built in the early 2000's so I've been trying to source some old school parts.

What did stifflers charge to install their stuff? And did you get their full fit system??

Only reason I ask is since I’m not too far I’m considering having them do the fit system install once I get the car back together

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I want to say it was $300 installed for just the subframe connectors, including parts. They let me hangout in the bay with them and seemed like great guys, I definitely recommend them.
