Changing The Lighting In Your Automatic Shifter

Recommended Posts

As you know, the stock automatic shifter in the 1994-2004 mustangs illuminates green.

If you change the color your gauge cluster illuminates by changing the bulbs behind it, then it will not match the shifter.

Here's a basic how-to on how to fix that problem.

**Part 1:**

The first thing you need to do is get rid of the shifter bezel. Just put your hands under each side and pull upwards. It should pop right out.

Then go ahead and twist it in order to access the plug for the power outlet. Disconnect the plug by simply pulling back on it.

Your shifter should then look like this:

Next go ahead and remove the 2 torx head screws using a t-15 bit.

Now you're done with the front-most part.

**Part 2:**

The next step is to remove the center console (or at least partially).

Start off by opening up the center console armrest and locating the 3 plugs covering 2 screws (towards the front of the car on the armrest).

Then go ahead and remove the plugs and grab a screwdriver and unscrew the 2 in the front.

Carefully lift up the console to reveal access to 7 more screws.

Next you need to unscrew the 2 screws located in the middle of the console. Don't worry about the other 6, they are just there to hold the top in place.

Once those 2 screws are out, the console should be free. You may have to unplug a few things such as your 2nd cigar lighter, fog light harness, etc.

**Please note, you do not have to remove the console completely to change the bulb.**

[TD]To remove the console completely, detach all harnesses/plugs and pull the e-brake all the way... and I mean ALL THE WAY.

Go ahead now and pull the console out of its position and as far away from the shifter as you can.

This should reveal enough room for you to work with in order to change the bulb. If not, keep wiggling it around until you can get in there.

Now go ahead and twist the bulb right out of the socket.

Once you've done that, it's time to replace the bulb.

**Now onto the most important part of the write-up.**

The bulb series for the shifter is a 194/168. Make sure you get a SMD LED with multiple lenses. The bulb has to be bright in order for it to shine through!

Now go ahead and put your LED in the socket, twist it back into place, and repeat the steps above in reverse to put the console back together.

Make sure to screw everything back into place. Go ahead and turn your lights on and see if it works.

You may have to wait til it's dark to see the light shine through.

**Final Results:**
