after researching different methods of preping and maybe talking to body shops about what grits of sand paper, types of etching primer if you have any sort of rust and body work, what kind of base and clear they recommend...etc.

i would go to a junkyard/scrapyard and buy a cheap fender. get it home, prep it, base and clear coat it, wet sand, buff and polish it maybe more than once to get a good feel for the process. buy doing this you'll use more material and have to pay for a fender but you will end up with a better paint job and less disaster to deal with, lol.
