How to change tranny fluid and do a short throw swap (T56 specific)

Recommended Posts

Alrighty guys, Im sure most of you already know how to do this but Ill put this up just in case someone needs help....

Step One: Throw the car up on jack stands.... you want to make sure that the car is sitting level while in the air so that the tranny fluid drains fully/properly....

Step Two: Put a catchpan underneath the tranny where the drain plug is.... (on the T56 the drain plug is located on the passenger side)...

Step Three: Remove the plug and let the fluid completely drain into the catch pan.... once it has completely stopped, put the drain plug back in.

Step 4: Some people like to pump the new fluid back into the fill plug, but that is just a pain so it is better to add the fluid in through the top (in my opnion)..

So, go in the car and removed the shifter nob... and lift up the plastic bezel with two hands so that it pops off....

Step 5: Before you completely pull the bezel off, dont forget to unplug this...

Step 6: Remove the 4 bolts holding the metal bracket down...

Step 7: Removed the bolts that are anchoring your shifter in place.... sometimes it may be hard to remove since they are usually held down with rtv/gasket sealant.... I had a hard time removing mine as well... so I went under the car, placed a long screwdriver on the bottom edge of the shifter... and lightly tapped the screwdriver with a hammer and the shifter was then loose...

Step 8: Before pouring any fluid into the tranny, remove the fill plug... (located on the drivers side on the T56)..

Step 9: Get a clean funnel and pour your transmission fluid slowly until there is a slow drip coming out of the fill plug (it took me a full 4 qts until a slow drip occured)

Step 10: Once the slow drip occurs, put the fill plug back in.... i torqued mine down according to the specs from Tremec (20 ft lbs)....Now just assemble in the reverse order.....

As a side note, when setting your shifter stops, make sure that there is only enough space between the stop and the shifter so that a piece of paper can slide through it..... the shifter should barely touch the stops when you put alot of pressure on it.... make sure you go through every gear and check the stops accordingly....
