sethg702
hey guys,How do I correct my speedometer? Do I need a hand held tuner? If thats the case Ill hold off cause of the money ($350+) I have a 3.73 gear ratio in the rear end. Would that have anything to do with it? Im running 275-40/R17, maybe thats throwing it off as well. Blackmage
what year and model? most are done by a handheld tuner, or speed-cal. i believe you can do the older ones with new speedo-gears in the trasmission and on the speed sensor. Slykin
You need a new speedometer gear. Maybe two. Unless someone already crammed a 7 tooth drive gear in the transmission, you'll need that, plus a 21 tooth speedo gear that goes into the side of the trans. The drive gear you have to install by removing the tailshaft of the transmission. Slykin
The little gears are REALLY easy to install, it's the drive gear that is a pain. The little speedometer gear just requires that you remove one bolt and the gear/sender come right out without a mess. Now the driven gear inside the tranny is a PITA. I replaced mine this winter :/

Or I can do it when I decide to replace my main bearing seal, its not leaking enough to leave a spot on the garage floor but it should be done. Det_Riot
If you just have to remove the tailshaft you might not even have to remove the trans. I don't know though. i'm just speculating.
Blackmage
You dont have to drop the trani. This is from some previous work i needed to do in it, but you can clearly see the green gear that you will need to replace. its not that bad. Pull the shifter out, theres a roll pin up top that you need to pop out where the shifter sits into, take the d/s out, pull the bolts on the tail shaft, slide her out. This was on a t-45, but pretty close to the same.

sethg702
its always the case with cheap parts needing to be installed, and then labor screws you over. Whats this speedcal you guys speak of? If thats 124 bucks I might be looking at doing the speedo gear swap for an even amount or maybe more. (parts+labor?) Im in a limited garage setting with all the normal hand tools. I still need a set of jack stands. Taking off my tail section of tranny might be a little interesting. I dont have a lift or a trans jack for underneath the car Ive noticed its all about the tools when it comes to working on a car.

joekd
Amen. I don't know why everyone is running around recommending a $124 speedcal when all you need is a $11 speedo gear. Because the speedo gear gets close but not always correct. You will notice that usually the same gear is recommended for 3.73 and 4.10's, I will stick with my $12o ford speedcal which is perfect when compared against GPS thank you. It also doesn't have the multiple reported failures that the gears do

A lot of guys try to half ass it by putting a gear in that doesn't mesh perfectly and "get close enough" because they don't want to mess with the driven gear. This'll eat gears and throw off your speedometer.

In a T5, I will always recommend a gear change... but you really need an electronic means for calibrating a high geared auto.
