How to make undercover clock pod radar detector (Not as good as TTOCS ;p)

Recommended Posts

Alright, this is how I made my undercover radar detector. I did it some time ago, and have since made a few modifications, right now I'm on what I would call V3.0, Versions one and two changed when I had issues with the power supply.

Version one I just ran the stock power cable to the cigarette lighter in a clean fashion, eventually that cable burnt up, so I clipped the end off it, and stripped down the wire and hardwired it. That was version two. That ended up melting eventually because of how thin the gauge of wire was.

So now we get to version three, where I'm making a little more money, so I can make the projects a little nicer. I could not buy a new power cord for this one, because nobody made one. I went to RadioShack and bought a connector that fit my radar detector, came home and soldered some 18 gauge speaker wire onto it. Heavy duty. The wire runs down the defrost vent in the car, I'm not drilling through the dash, though one day I may get an SN95 dash that originally had a clock, so I can get an all black dash.

Keep in mind, I'm not TTOCS, his radar detector looks much better. Ha!

This first run of pictures is of the original, with the terrible wrap job, then you can see version 3, it's not quite finished yet but it will be much nicer.

Enjoy.

Tinted and wrapped.

Verion 1.0 complete, sitting a little crooked.

I don't have any in process pictures of version 2, nor any of it mounted, though it got put on straight, as will version 3 haha.

Anywho:

The ol whistler.

Just put some epoxy on to hold the base in. Clamping her down. Note the vinyl was wrapped all the way around the front of the rear section of the clock pod this time.

DSC08506.jpg

Metal base, and the vinyl spread, still unwrapped.

DSC08507.jpg

It's set up so this can just slide right in when the time is right.

The detector sitting inside the pod.

It's behind the screen this time. The picture makes it look a lot worse than it is. The lexan is actually pretty well black, everywhere except where the numbers will be. It's more of a smoked look than the picture shows.

Still on the to do list, finish wrapping it, which involves cutting the holes for the laser and the 360* laser, and a hole cut for the power cord. The cord is already ran behind the dash. More pics to come!

Sorry if you guys think its ghey. I like it because I've had cops sit in my car and asked them to find my radar detector and none of them have. It's not illegal in Florida, but it is frowned upon. Thanks for looking.

Here it is on, and me doing my best MiGusta face. During the startup, all signs come on in sequence, then it goes back to just the H for highway.

And here be a video of my beautiful self.

Are you planning on wiring in a quick disconnect style power off switch or something similar? I know here they are illegal and they have scanners that register if a scanner is in the car so it would be a cool option to allow someone to be able to have a hidden button to press if they were pulled.

I have it ran to the foglight switch in the center console. I haven't been able to find a factory switch, so I gutted one of the change holders and put in a generic red switch. Most people think it's factory haha. I'll snag a pic when it's not raining and I get out there and finish the whole thing up. I just pulled off the the clamps, it looks really good. Hardest part will be wrapping the vinyl, but now I have that metal base which should help quite a bit.

Good idea. I was thinking about something similar but sounds like you already have that covered. Looks good bro. I would invest in this project if my car was going to be mainly on the street. Good job.

The two detection points on this detector remain uncovered. If you read in the post I say this:

Still on the to do list, finish wrapping it, which involves cutting the holes for the laser and the 360* laser, and a hole cut for the power cord. The cord is already ran behind the dash. More pics to come!

It's ok, I know we all just like pictures :)

like i said already good idea, def interested in the finish product. i feel like that doesn't even clear the windsheild though? does the plate help?

explain your question please.

The plate underneath is solely to give me somewhere to wrap the vinyl nicer this time and to give the detector something to sit on, so it's a bit more flush this time around.

It worked fine in V1.0 and V2.0, this one is all around better and will be nicer looking and shouldn't burn up this time thanks to the higher grade of wire.

It always worked fine for me. Granted, even if it didn't I wouldn't care too much. I know when I can speed around here, and don't actually need it much. I just think it's something neat, and girls always think I'm some master cool guy when I flick a switch and the dash beeps and lights up haha

the laser needs clear view, and i feel like it doesn't sit high enough to clear and see over the hood. is that not the case?

Honestly with laser if your detector goes off more then likely they already have your speed unless you have a jammer - yes the expensive ones do work.

If this is something that others like the idea of check out a remote system. I used a whistler pro 3450 and like I said it comes with a mountin plate that makes it super easy to do with out needing to modify the back.

well idunno now. The small downtown area I live by is basically a big speed trap with 20-25 mph zones all through it. It isn't worth it to even try to save time through it nor is it the place but it is really easy to come screammin in down the hill at 30 and find them waiting. Its a nice reminder if I do forget though.

Yea, they are like that around here...always sitting in 25 mph zones waiting for you to come screaming by at 31 mph.

Ive pretty much just trained myself to go slow around town and keep the boosting for the back roads where they dont sit but I dont really speed all the time in my mustang. More or less just cruise around unless im WOT.

I was told sitting them behind the wipers was a no no... Mastercox rox his out in plain site and has been pulled over with no issues... Me on the other hand had my ole cobra up in the window and i got a 85MPH in a 40 and a hefty ticket... I put mine in the trash and never looked back. Some people seem to have great luck with them tho...

I wish I could afford a Passport 9500 ix, I really like how it stores speed trap locations using gps, red light tickets too. I think more and more police are starting to use instant on, which nullifies the effectiveness of detectors. I like the idea of hiding it in the dash clock pod, would worry about it not being high enough to work though.

that's why you buy the one that has the scanner scanner. I rolled my 8 years in VA with a detector that had a detector and they work really well. Wish I still had that damn thing even though now it would be so outdated it's not funny lol.

Yea, better ods on a bike i guess..

Post up some more progress TEW im curious as to how the end result will look!

I might be able to work on it some tomorrow since I'll be home from work, we'll see. Wrapping vinyl is the worst part of the project lol

Not saying this is a fun project and a low cost one at that. But there is better ways in doing that. I like the idea but I think that escort and passport make a radar detector that you can hide. It's an external unit with internal control it's a little on the high side but saves the clock :) I know I used my clock space for auto meter gauges :) but really good idea :)

2 times I have successfully outran a cop. One I was on my bike and probably about a mile er two from my house. I passed a cop at 15 mph over and saw him immediatly pull a u-turn to come after me. It was late at night, and in a fairly complex housing/road design so that time I was just easy to gun it to my street and then just go and pull it in the back yard.

The other time was in my mustang years ago(95 ish) again at night. Just dropped my g-friend off at the time and she was going to drive back to my place so I would not have to drive her home. On the way back I got behind a guy going 40 in a 45, not sure why. When it opened up in a passing zone I dropped it to 2nd gunned it and threw it in 3rd as I was pulling back into the lane when I saw a cop parked in my old high school parking lot shooting radar me with no detector at the time. I really didn't realize that I hit 75 when I pulled back in but since this was the case, no need to slow down now. it would have taken him a while to get out of the parking lot where he had parked so I was off. I was lucky enough to catch the one light that I needed too and again took off for the house. I pulled into the garage and had the door shutting before the car was off or even all the way in the car. When I girlfriend pulled up the first words out of her mouth were if I was running from the cops. She was not behind me to see the pass but I guess on her trip to my house she saw 4 different cops.... I young and stupid at the time and got lucky.

Also check out K40 if you like remote radars. They just have a really simple led based display that you could probably put in the pod with clock still there. They also make a great lazer scrambler that does work.

and again a remote radar detector is really made for this type of install. I used a whistler pro 3450 and been really happy with it the Laser sensor mounts on teh back of my rear-view mirror and hangs down just enough so the back is covered as well although I am probably going to add an additional sensor on the back licence plate just for better coverage. The radar sensor is mounted below the front bumper and the display obvisously goes in the pod. The display came with a mounting piece that it just slid into. All I had to do was cut out the hole so the display would go through it, trim down a little bit of the mountin piece so it fit. Then it was just glue, fill, sand, paint clear. This is what he meant by not being as good as mine but with the remote system and the fact I did this for aliving for 10+ yrs it would not be fair to compair the two really.

whats with the name change I was all confused there..... I didn't want to take anything away from your build up here but I wanted them to know that there was stuff made to do this. Hope I didn't step on your toes on your build page.

one suggestion I thought about last night if it isn't too late and you glued the plexi in. I would suggest painting the back side of all the areas you do not want to see black or I am afraid when it lights up you might end up seeing the edges that you cut in the pod. if it isn't too late, first put it in place with the detector behind it and then on the front put the masking tape to cover all the areas you want to see through it. Then take it and turn it around and now cover that same area up with the tape on the back. Now hit it with the black, peel the tape and it will cover those edges.

It's not too late, but it doesn't shine through. It didn't shine through before and I didn't have it as dark. Now, the only section that shines through right where the detector is. The screen can be easily popped out if necessary though, it's just hot glued in, since it doesn't take much of a beating, it held it fine the last two times.
