Custom 99-04 Ducktail spoiler.

Recommended Posts

Im normally not much of a spoiler guy on the 94-04 platforms, but after seeing some ducktail styles that were blended into the 99-04 body style, i decided to do my own.

First up i glued some balsawood pieces to the edge of the body line on the car and then cut/sanded to shape:

then i fiberglassed the top and bottom sides:

then routed out the edge so i could fill it with thickened epoxy to give a hard edge:

Marked the cutting seam and disconnected the quarter panel pieces from the decklid section:

Did a whole lot of filling and sanding:

until that was all done:

Ive had a few people ask me about doing these for a 94-98 chassis.  I'm willing to do it, but i need a minimum of 10 people to commit with a $50 non refundable deposit (basically gives me the funds to find a roller or a car with a wrecked front end to use to make up the spoiler plug).  Pricing would be the same as the 99-04 cars.  $400 for Carbon Fiber (colored fabrics available for extra) and $260 for fiberglass, plus shipping costs.

I'd buy you a trunk and whatever else you need if you could make a whole deck lid similar to the E46 M3 CSL bootlid.... just kinda extending the "natural" wing of the trunk out and up.

Got any photos to show what you mean?

this is the hardest part about doing stuff like this.... finding something everyone likes. Lol

Well.. we shall see...  the two cheap v6's are still in the $600-800 range.

I inquired to a junkyard about getting a back section from the package tray aft... $1800!!

as for the ducktail style. Those i can do no issue, the Bmw style would be a bit more, especially if in bare CF.  If its just wanted in fiberglass that could be bonded to the car and then painted, that would be way quicker and cheaper, especially if it would just be a one off part.

Ive also got the CF Saleen T1 spoilers i have to do.  I expect that project to get started in early Nov.

Then there is the CF power steering reservoir and coolant expansion/fill tank im going to do for my car.

Waaayyy to many projects. Good thing winter is coming and outside work will slow down... just gotta get the current project in epoxy primer and the jams painted so i can reassemble it enough so i can push it outside and have a full shop to work in this winter.

After the hurricane, and I get a free weekend... I can probably just get trunks for you for like $50-100 each.

I almost bought one of those CSL ducktail spoilers off ebay just to see if I could trim and mold it on my old 96 vert. They would be popular I bet if you could pull it off.

I've wanted to do it for years, but I don't posses the skills to even come close to making it.  The body line on the quarters and the "lip" of the trunk lend themselves so well to the idea.

I will be keeping an eye on whatever CF parts you end up coming out with. I'm still very much married to my crab claw but the possibility of any more CF parts for these cars definitely raises my eyebrows.

Maybe even a certain gauge pod?

Thomas would do a good job on one.

If someone has the speed of sound gauge pod for our cars I'd pay good money for s carbon version of it.

It still kills me that they stopped making it as it's the only pillar pod I've ever wanted.

With it being patented, that would be difficult to do legally and expensive.

Id be better off designing my own version of it.

They discontinued it. That doesn't free it up??

Nope, patent still prevents people from knocking it off unless you get permission from the patent holder and pay royalties.

That is still a plan, its about time to start pulling body panels off my red car, which means its getting closer to doing the covers.

Im being lazy, whats the difference between 94/95 and 96-04 covers?  I know the overflow tanks are different.. my plan is to make the 96-04 covers smooth so they can be cut and notched by the owner to fit their particular application.

@ThomasW It might be another couple weeks until I can get to the junk yard for trunks, but I thought I would show some more pictures from my old car for reference.  Also, I don't know if it's cheaper or easier, but I would be perfectly okay with fiberglass.
