Poisoned Pony's Rotten Pumpkin, my 2004 Mach 1

Recommended Posts

Pretty much a direct copy of my build thread on the other forum

Walking thru the used car storage lot back in October, I spied this little gem of a Mach 1 sitting in auction area. It was owned by a fellow local club member who traded it in for a new Focus ST. Long story short, pulled the trigger, got a screaming deal on it and sold the Tangerine '96 GT. Now I'm a Mach owner for the 2nd time around

Details:
- 2004 Mach 1, 5 speed manual
- Competition Orange, 113k miles

Mods:
- Magnaflow Magnapack catback
- O/R X-pipe
- lowering springs
- underdrive pullies
- canned tune
- 17x9 and 17x10.5 '03 Cobra rims
- 4.10 gears

pics from when I did the used vehicle inspection and a session my wife shot with a model friend of hers

So this past February, I got her all cleaned up for a big local Mustang show

Then the friday before the show, Valentine's Day, I was on my way to work when I witnessed a Windstar rear ending an Expedition at 50 mph. No cars flew in my lane, but I got a shower of debris. I thought it was just glass, but it turned out to be battery acid from the Windstar's battery. The effects of the battery acid on clearcoat are not pretty

and yes, that is the paint peeling on the hood as a result. So with insurance stuff in hand, the car was dropped at a body shop to begin her stripping and repainting courtesy of the Windstar's insurance. The initial estimate was at $4500 but called for blending the paint. The shop I chose to perform the work decided against blending and recommended stripping the paint totally. PPG reps confirmed and USAA signed off (my insurance company, was going thru them prior to the Windstar's company taking fault). As of now, the bill is at $7000, not including a new rear bumper that was a casualty of the media blasting and my month long rental.

Holy Hell. That's some nasty stuff! You said it was brake fluid? Yah that stuff can suck my nuts for what it did to my one wheel......

Anywho! Glad to see it getting the proper treatment and not being half assed! Be sure to keep us updated!!

Originally it was thought to be brake fluid til the PPG reps came out to inspect the paint and determined it to be battery acid

The car will no doubt look immaculate when they're finished, I definitely understand why they decided to completely strip the paint. If any of that battery acid was still in the paint/metal, they'd be re-spraying again, so a simple scuff and repaint wouldn't do.

Holy cow.  Talk about a nice treat being taken care of by the insurance company so well there.  Looks like you will come out smelling like a rose on that one and have a beautiful paint job to boot.

Kind of on topic here.  Looking at the bumper laid up on the paint stand reminded me.....how do most of you get the bumper off the headlight panel...in particular the middle tab that goes under the headlight?

I use a screwdriver and pry/twist the headerpanel apart and the tab slips right out.

Looks like they're really doing an awesome job. I'm actually kind of surprised since it is insurance work. Was the original paint on the car starting to fade at all in spots? I used to have a Comp. Orange Mustang...I bought it new and had it for a few years and by time I sold it a lot of the plastic parts started to not match the rest of the car. Bumpers, rockers, side scoops, etc. If yours was doing the same then maybe all this was a blessing in disguise.

the side scoops were starting to fade and the drivers fender was a darker shade than the rest of the car. The rear bumper had been resprayed before but matched the car better than the fender. Definitely a blessing in disguise.

I saw the car earlier today. The glass guy was there setting up to do his thing while the body guys were at lunch. All they had to reinstall were the doors, trim and front end. Their work will be wrapped up today, the stripes and detail is tomorrow. I'll pick her up after work tomorrow.

Total bill USAA is sending to Geico: $9326

Replaced: both bumper covers, mirrors, cowl panel, window moldings, windshield, stripes (the body shop is crediting me money for the hood stripe which I'll use for painting the hood)

I have some look stuff on order, new foglights, new chin spoiler (no damage so it wasn't covered). Photoshoot coming this weekend provided weather co-operates

My thanks to Gerber Collision in Orlando for putting up with my pestering and for keeping up to date each day on the progress. Top notch service!

I've done long tubes in my car twice now. I feel your pain. It is not fun at all! First time was BBK, then I upgraded to ARH longtubes with an o/r x. The power and sound is definitely worth the headache though lol
