Me and @Sleeperstang1994 have outgrown our household oven for powder coating and we've been wanting a larger oven for quite some time. Recently, Josh bought a power box and heating elements so now we are getting started on building the actual oven. We've read a couple DIY builds and figured that we would benefit from a 7' x 3' x 3' oven.

Today we stopped by Home Depot for some metal studs to start the framing. The base will consist of 2x4 with a hoop that will extend up each side and across the top. This will give us a sturdy base and a strong top for hanging heavy parts. The studs we bought are simply used for the framing which will be covered with 22ga steel sheets and filled with Rockwool to contain the heat. I will be stopping to order the 2x4 and sheets Monday. So here's what we accomplished today.

All the studs we bought (15 total I believe)

Rock wool.

After some cutting.

One side done.

Making sure we had everything square.

The back and the front (door) had an extra stud in the middle for strength. The two sides will have the 2x4.

Ummm, bigger than we thought, lol.

We can cook humans!

Then we added the top. Again, the base will be made from 2x4.

Here is the oven controller I picked up from a local powder coating supplier. This has a built in timer and heat controller. It can run up to 4 elements if we choose. However I feel like 2 will be plenty for now. 49b4ad3036dffc10f02dc9c0f8f1198e.jpge1cab266dd7706ab4960a918032e6fad.jpg

I have been wanting to get into powder coating my own stuff for a while now.  Last summer while walking my dog I saw a neighbor wheel out an oven after doing a remodel with the sign "FREE" on it.  I almost tried to drag it home on the walk but after a little bit of thought with how small it was, my next image was similar to the one above with you standing inside the huge oven frame to have one big enough.  I saw a person on another forum go through the same thing so I passed.

You just need to get yourself a dolly Scott. Haha. I believe Josh picked up our household oven with his truck for like $25 or something. He has a 90-something F150 with a six cylinder which we kind of abuse. It's taken over 3000lbs of scrap down to the scrap yard. It gets the job done. Talk about having to slip the clutch. :D

It was just up the street from my house and I could have easily got it home but I knew that the oven was just the top of the rabbit hole that I would start to travel down eventually landing in that pic of standing inside an oven I am building.  I have enough projects going on I am trying to do myself I don't mind dropping the powder stuff off just to pic up finished.

Epic beard @Sleeperstang1994

ive been putting a decent bit of effort into it lately :) got some awseome natural beard oil from my sister for Christmas and my wife duplicated the recipe and made me some home made brew now. Sean got some as well. Next on the list is a good comb. I take my avatar very serious.

<-------<-----------<-----------<----------- back onton the oven. More updates this weekend hopefully

Work in progress. Got our base assembled and welded together. Sean decided to use out top bar for the base so we had to weld a new top bar together. It's just how we do things. Sheet metal is all cut. Currently welding the upright hoop together!e450214be3d44cace616fbd4eed4a83b.jpg2afc6692629295c4fddb793946cc9124.jpgd31521a2fa6f8a07a805a28ecbde9a09.jpga2377fcb0211328c161ffd718e049e9d.jpg04b21315f2fbc4ea13c3440c865ebe84.jpg

Pictures! The 2x4 frame is all done. We just want to paint the left vertical beam and the top. The back wall is up with the inside sheet metal wall. We won't be adding any outside sheet metal walls until the end because we need to run wires and fill it with rock wool. Also, we'll probably add a small fan or two to help circulate heat through out the oven. The frame for the right side is screwed down and it's ready for the inside wall.

Josh left to pick up some oil dye for a truck while I welded together the base.

Josh's head is actually blurry in real life.

Here he's cutting the top horizontal 2x4 which is made up of three different pieces because apparently I forgot to get enough. :o

I don't get to weld much so I was having fun.

Here is the completed 2x4 frame, minus the four 4" feet.

My buddy let us borrow pneumatic metal shears which made cutting the sheets easy, however they must have been dull because it was flipping difficult! As you can see from Josh's picture I laying down because half way through the cut because I got tired. Josh is notching this bottom piece to clear the 2x4.

Here Josh is welding the feet on and capping the open ends of the 2x4 to prevent them from rusting from the inside.

22ga galvanized inner wall.

Hopefully this 500 degree engine paint will hold up.

Josh wanting me to hurry up and help him.

And this is what we accomplished for the day.

we are only about 10-12 minutes off of the Harrisburg East exit of the turn pike. Stop by when ever you want! As long as its not snowing :)

i came upon some valve covers in my garage, think this oven would be able to do them?

I would think so. It might be a little harder to work them into the schedule since I did offer to coat them before we shipped them!

Our next job, after the oven, will be to make a booth for applying powder. Need to go pluck some petals off the money tree. ^_^

I may have some more pictures tomorrow. We finished painting the 2x4 and we need to figure out some more of the layout. As with any first time project, you encounter problems and find out how you could have improved certain parts after it's too late.

Hmph. This thread has been going longer than I thought. Lol! But hey, that's not unusual. We have all the interior walls made and we have been replacing all the sheet metal screws with steel rivets. The assembly is quite stiff/secure now. I don't have a picture but we just started the door. We have some things to order to keep this thing moving forward.

I always appreciate information like this. First he calls to get a price on a shortblock, then we get a letter in the mail with him asking for about $3000 and now we find out it's sitting at InTune. Yet I have screen shots from FB where he said it was tuned to 703hp at 24lbs of boost and it's running great. If anyone ever sees something that doesn't add up, please let us know. :)

@Steve@CJPP

@Blackmage

As for the oven, we need to order some high temp wire, rope insulation for the door to seal against and hinges/clamps. Since we have a job this weekend we'll have some money to put towards these parts.
