The Chronicles of 95riosnake's OCD Machine

Yea even though they say they aren't necessary, they aren't that expensive. Throw in a few fittings and I'm fine with it for a bit more peace of mind. I need to decide whether to "feature" them somewhere visible or tuck them away out of sight... not sure yet. I'm hoping to wrap up the last bit of E3 wiring this weekend and move on to such things.

is it the billet looking ones? i've seen some pretty dope looking water traps if that makes sense lol.

They're plain looking, but the satin silver look is what I was going for. These had the best reviews I found. There are a few really cool looking ones out there but they had mixed reviews.

You can see the SMC's I went with in this pic:

aw yea those are nice looking traps. i had some that were mostly glass and had them on display in my old truck bed...regretted it as i had no clue how brown tank water gets :( lol

i think that was before the days of nice aluminum tanks

Those gauges are volts and water temp, they'll be in the center console cup holder pod, unrelated to the air ride but just happened to be in the picture. The E3 display shows all your pressure readings on the screen so pressure gauges aren't needed.

Nice looking setup you put together. I remeber back in the day when we didn't have all the fancy load leveling sensors and such. We had bags, tanks, switches, and big loud valves!!!!!!' Lol

This message courtesy of crapatalk!

And I'll bet they were way cheaper too lol, the price of this kit if bought all brand new is pretty rough haha. Technology is awesome but it'll put a hurting on your wallet!

I'm sure you guys are sick of looking at pictures of E3 wiring...the good news is it's finally done. I ended up spending almost a whole day finishing the compressor harness. It was the most complicated of the bunch, and I had to add some fuse holders on the power wires to the compressors, another on the power wire for the ECU, etc. (per the RideTech wiring diagram). The wiring that I bought with the management was missing those fuses so I had to order them, along with more Tech Flex and shrink tubing. The problem with waiting for shipping is the old saying "idle hands are the devil's workshop" because when I was browsing for the fuse holders, I decided to add weatherpak connectors to anything that didn't already have one, then had to buy a weatherpak crimper tool and a release tool for times when you need to pull the pins out of the connectors. The crimper was pretty spendy but at least I'll be covered in the future when I want to add them to wiring projects (pretty sure I will be rewiring the fan up front with a nice weatherpak connector soon). The end result is very nice and professional looking, I couldn't be happier with it.

So here's the last, and most complex harness slathered in Tech Flex and weatherpaks. I dig it :2thumb:

The messy wires for the compressors also got the same treatment.

I've removed a ton of wire and wire loom from the harnesses so far...much better for it all to be in this box than bundled up in the rear seat delete. Plus now I have a bunch of nice wire for future wiring projects. :2thumb:

Flj7fJ.jpg

I know it probably looks the same as before, but here it is in place. The only things left that aren't connected are the harnesses for the 4 ride height sensors (they'll plug into those 4 remaining spots on the ECU). I'm going to wait until I get all 4 bags in the car before I mount the sensors because they need to see a certain range of motion as you air the car up/down. I'll have to tackle that once I have everything. I'll most likely be shortening the harnesses for those as well.

i1wic0.jpg

Also this is kinda funny... this is my view when I look up through the back window while having all this wiring "fun". Not planned when I hung it, kinda cool though lol.

KWKNJC.jpg

The display pod is finished, pending a covering of some sort. Even though had I said I made up my mind to go with alcantara, I keep thinking I might want to go carbon fiber wrap to match the Carbon Driven stuff... I emailed a company for a quote to see what carbon would cost me vs. the alcantara. I like both options equally, so I'm gonna let my wallet make the decision for me.

Ryan @Prokiller and Troy @Yeahloh95 came to visit last weekend and take in the World of Wheels show with me (you should post a thread with pics from the show Ryan). Troy is an awesome guy, and has been working at polishing my side exhaust for a while now, he was finished with it so he brought it along with him. These pipes are going to look incredible on the car. I owe Troy big time for this one, he still needs to decide on how I can return the favor!

Here's a before/after of what he started with and what it looks like now.

And here's the whole setup. It's a thing of beauty. It'll be a shame to hide it under the car!

Envious.  I used to have access to a weatherpak crimper and no longer do.  Always wanted one of my own but its one of those tools I'd use so seldom I can't justify the cost of a good one.

Everything looks great!

Here's a link to the one I bought should you ever decide to pick up one, it's the best one I could find that was reasonably priced (you can spend a LOT more on one of these). All the reviews are great, made in USA, and it's a ratcheting dual action that holds the pin, crimps it and crimps on the weather seal all at once. I've used it about a dozen times or so now and it works perfectly, I actually looked forward to using it each time lol.

Mmmmm, exhaust porn. @Yeahloh95 Great job polishing up those pipes.  Nice job with the wiring too.  Looks much better.  So are those weatherpak connectors the be-all, end-all of wiring connectors?  Seems like people talk very highly of them.  The pod looks great too; I look forward to seeing what it gets wrapped up in.

thanks i tried my best on them, stainless is soo much harder to do than aluminum , i could have spent another couple weeks on them, but once they are on the car you will see where i spent my time

I can imagine.  Seems like stainless is a PITA to do anything with.  Nice stuff though for sure.

Dan, I was thinking, are you going to do anything to protect and preserve the finish?  I thought about Zoop Seal and Googled it real quick and apparently the inventor/owner of Zoop Seal has switched to Shine Seal.  I haven't had the need for anything like that in a long time so that was news to me.

I actually bought Shine Seal a couple years back for my HRE's and it works great. I've run low on a couple components of the kit since, so I plan to order some more. But yea, the plan is to hit them with Shine Seal :2thumb:

Put a few more hours in on the car yesterday, some good things happened, and some not so good things happened...but I'll get to that later.

Started out by pulling the air ride stuff and trunk panels out

UKvyyQ.jpg

Reason: to pull the MM rear coilovers which will be living a new life on @haterbuilt's soon to be IRS-swapped 98

YqxKtr.jpg

While the air ride setup was out, I finally got around to something I've been meaning to do for a while. The sides of the aluminum bracket where the compressors mount have a bit of flex, and since the compressors will be vibrating I wanted to limit that flex. I was browsing Fully Torqued Racing's ( @poxenham ) IG page a few months back and their splitter supports looked like the perfect thing to use. I decided to triangulate the side of the compressor bracket to the rear bolt that mounts the tank to the frame. Only had to drill one hole too :2thumb:

You're looking at the bottom of the tank in this photo.

d8oHnM.jpg

KUyrCO.jpg

r5xocK.jpg

kdjyjZ.jpg

Then added a couple clamps to hold the compressor wires.

6vAEp8.jpg

I'm still deciding how I want to route the compressor lines to the tank. I might unbolt and clock the top of the compressor to point the line fitting away from the tank, inward, etc. Still tossing ideas around currently.

H66MrK.jpg

Fc00O4.jpg

Now that the coilovers were out, I could start messing with the rear quarters to let me slam the car as low as possible. Pulled the rear wheel off the shelf, then took a cool pic (note the @69clark -supplied Ridetech logo for my fancy trash can :) ) before I got to work.

LUaEHZ.jpg

Threw the wheel on and not surprisingly, no dice. The quarters are gonna need some work to make it happen.

5dnXE2.jpg

ldaziS.jpg

2bE0r4.jpg

Bolted the roller on and things were going well, at first. I've known for a long time that there was a bit of bondo on the passenger quarter from the previous owner, well I found out just how much when it started cracking.

10pXMD.jpg

I was already planning to paint both sides of the car because of how much rolling I'll be doing, and because I'm mounting up the nos pair of SVO skirts I've had waiting for about 6-7 years. So I figured I'd dig out the filler, which was about 1/4" thick in some places...  :o

MxYSKz.jpg

f6midc.jpg

Out came the wire wheel on my angle grinder, the sander, etc. to see what I was dealing with, and it isn't pretty. The metal is in bad shape behind the side scoop and the wheel well lip is actually cracked through. The metal looks kinda clean in these pics, but it was mildly rusted under the filler and the metal behind the scoop is pretty thin.

WnN20M.jpg

dyLD95.jpg

MOayt6.jpg

So I have a quarter panel coming from a Texas 96 cobra. This junk will be cut out and I'll weld in a new panel. I'm not going to replace the whole quarter though. I'll likely do from below the scoop up to the body line, then back to just forward of the fuel door. That will give me a nice fresh quarter lip to work with. I'm no body man but I can weld, so I'll take my time and do it right. I'm pretty bummed though because this makes Carlisle look highly unlikely.

Plus side...the tire fits pretty well and I wasn't even done rolling yet. The rear part of the lip where it meets the bumper cover is proving to be the problem though. Not really sure what I'm gonna do there.

jaYbnz.jpg

NGwxIl.jpg

I've bitched and moaned to a few buddies via text since yesterday, and after sleeping on it I'm not as depressed as I was originally. Definitely not the end of the world, just another detour on the way to what I see in my head :2thumb:

well the new quarter should do the trick....so do you think you'll be able to just roll the quarters a tad then only have to deal with the bumper/quarter joint. that would be nice...at least ya don't have to do big ass flares, which i kinda assumed you would lol.

that tanks compressor mount is sooo fn badass btw!!

Holy shit!  When you said not so good things happened I wasn't expecting anything that like.  Sorry man, I know you wanted to wait to get that involved with the quarters.  When messing with mine I, too, noticed how the rear half of the wheel arch really tapers in.  I probably won't be going as low as you so I wasn't too worried about it.  Maybe you could do something kinda like what I'm up to with it.  When putting the new quarter on space it out a bit at the rear of the arch and modify the outer wheel well and the structure beneath the bumper cover.  Just that would be pretty subtle.  Food for thought.  I'm sure you'll come up with something nice.

Despite all that, everything else looks great.  Even those last two shots with the paint missing it still looks kick ass tucking that tire a little bit.

Flare that bitch!! Lol

x2

Haha, while I would love to, it's not in the cards right now. If I flare the quarters, I'll need to do the fronts as well. Then I'll be blowing my wheels apart to widen them, etc. I need to limit snowball growth at this point so it'll just be getting a replacement panel and a little modding to clear the tire.

Yea I'm going to just roll them and see what I can do with the rear edge, if I can't get it too much lower, it is what it is for now. I'm getting burnt out coming up on 2.5 years off the road now to be honest lol. And thanks, I'm really happy with the tank mount. :2thumb: The surprising thing is, without the compressors mounted to it the whole thing only weighs around 10-15 lbs. I was surprised how light it was. Like I was telling you I'm still on the fence about colors on all of it but I'll figure it out.

Damn what a surprise :oit must have been a terrible moment

Fix and forget.

At the end you'll have a badass stance

Yep, I'm trying to just focus on the finish line and keep plugging along lol.

Yea, like I said I always knew there was some mud in this quarter because there was a paint crack in the beveled area behind the side scoop, and there was a slightly off color blend on the quarter that flowed onto the door about half way. I just never expected to find it so thick, and over a really sloppily repaired panel. It sucks but it has to be fixed. I can't just bondo over it and forget about it, it would drive me insane. I'm going to see what I can do about the rear edge of the lip. I doubt I'll get to tuck half of the sidewall like I wanted to, but I'll just get as much as I can. I'm sure a few relief cuts, some bending and filling with sheet metal will push the edge out a bit. I just want to really make sure I don't screw up the lines of the quarters.

Now that's what you call a shitty day.  Pleased to hear you're fixing it correctly instead of taking the easy way out, but I'd expect nothing less from you!

The compressor setup looks kick ass!  Personally I would totally clock the compressor 180 degrees so the lines faced in.  Would look great!

Anything is possible!!!

Oh I could tuck the whole damn wheel if I rebuilt them with smaller outer lips (not gonna happen lol) or just got different wheels that didn't have as aggressive of an offset, lol. But alas, the struggle is real.

Yea I was in a pretty bad mood, like a push the car into the river kinda mood initially, but after I cooled down I'm not too upset. It just puts another time consuming task in front of me being "finished" but at this point, I'm pretty numb to that. And to think, I originally was planning to have this all done by MW 2013, you might say I was a bit naive... lol. I think I'm gonna do a little bit of a flare to get the clearance I need, but it won't be anything very noticeable. One thing is for sure, it's tough to get these cars low without a mini tub...and with an IRS the mini tub option kinda goes out the window.

I'm definitely looking into clocking the top of the compressors. The only thing I'm a bit leary of is that will void the warranty. I haven't even kicked them on yet to make sure they work, so I should probably at least check first before I go voiding things lol. They're not cheap compressors so I'd be pretty upset if I void the warranty only to fire up the air ride for the first time and find that one of the compressors is a dud.

Damn Dan, at least you have the ability to fix that quarter, and found it before it became more of a rust issue later down the road.  Did you start on the other side yet rolling, or just this side?

wow dude i was not expecting that.  i knew you had said before about it being a problem area but definitely not to that level.  that really really sucks.  but like others have said, at least you found it now before it got any worse.  did you figure out who is going to get the paint duty?

Just this side so far, I was planning to do the passenger side first and replicate whatever I end up doing. I'd rather get the hard one out of the way first, then do the driver's side after lol.

You and me both. I didn't think the metal would be in bad shape. The edge of the wheel well opening isn't even usable... ugh FML.

I'd love to have Butchy paint it but getting it all the way up to him for anything less than a full paint job seems like a waste. I'll have to start shopping around locally soon, but I'm not that close to the paint stage quite yet.

not to side track the quarter panel issue but dam that wheel brake combo <3 !!!

Haha thanks, seeing those big wilwoods peaking out of the wheels definitely helps take my focus off the eyesore on the quarter panel lol.

i just noticed too you have those nifty vents in the wheel wells :) i miss mine on my 95 haha  makes my 96 look like a poser

They definitely make burnouts a little cooler looking right? lol

Nice job on the exhaust @Yeahloh95 . Very clean wiring as usual Dan, but wooowww that's some bondo. Ah well, we all know you will fix it and make it even better. ;)

I'll say this, whatever body man did it is very good with bondo, like pretty much a sculptor. It takes a decent amount of skill to build up that area with bondo, lol. Other than a very slight color difference you would have never known there was bondo lol.

Are you planning on tucking as much of the tire as you can or having it sit flush?

I'd like to tuck about half of the tire sidewall, but I want the quarter lip to be flush on the sidewall with about 1/8" of space between. Not the traditional tuck like on pro touring muscle cars where there's like 2" between the sidewall and quarter lip, and also not flush like the quarter resting on the sidewall, if that makes sense lol. Kinda going for a middle ground between the two. :2thumb:
