Low and Slow 97 GT Build Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm sure most of you have seen my build thread on some other sites, but I figure I will post a compressed version of it on here and continue to update it as I change things up on the car. It is a never ending project, and I still have a TON of stuff that I want to do with this car. I'm still very young (I just turned 18) and can proudly say I have turned every nut and bolt on this car myself and paid for every single modification out of my own pocket, no mommy and daddy funding here.

It all started back in 2011. I picked the car up from a buddy of mine bone stock with nothing more than a K&N filter and some weld-in mufflers. These pics were after the first full detail it got.

And after I swapped on a set of 03 Cobras I had laying around.

coupe039.jpg

coupe044.jpg

Then I bought some Eibach Sportlines.

DSCN2653.jpg

Put them in and painted my calipers.

How the car looked after that.

Then I bought some FR500's

What the underside looked like.

then I put a UPR x pipe on it with a Flowmaster Catback.

Got my sway bar bushings, end links, and struts installed.

IMG_4060.jpg

IMG_8528.jpg

IMG_5533.jpg

That bone stock engine though...

IMG_4292.jpg

Then I got some 275/60/15 Nitto tractor tires

IMG_4476.jpg

IMG_6004.jpg

IMG_6054.jpg

The car stayed like this for a while. Then it was finally time to do something to the engine. It was just painfully slow. I couldn't take it any longer. I bought a PI intake that was ported by Modular Head Shop, some PI cams (Which still haven't been installed), a TFS plenum, and some installation pieces.

IMG_3554.jpg

IMG_3252.jpg

IMG_5240.jpg

I then tore the engine down a little bit.

DSCN3798.jpg

Cleaned up the engine bay

IMG_3395.jpg

IMG_7546.jpg

IMG_8626.jpg

New Motorcraft water pump, thermostat, and serpentine belt. I figured I might as well do it while it was apart.

IMG_1870.jpg

And then I painted my intake silver. I really like how it turned out.

IMG_2610.jpg

I also painted my plenum black.

IMG_3079.jpg

I finished painting my accessories for the plenum and TB.

DSCN3806.jpg

Got the heater hose installed, as well as the new water pump.

Put in a new set of spark plugs. These were the original 130,000 mile plugs according to the original owner!!!

DSCN3823.jpg

Painted my alternator

DSCN3815.jpg

And then got most of the parts installed.

DSCN3821.jpg

DSCN3822.jpg

DSCN3820.jpg

Then I purchased a JLT intake

blackcar010.jpg

blackcar031.jpg

blackcar019.jpg

Also a few pics of the exterior of the car after doing another complete detail

blackcar060.jpg

blackcar050.jpg

Then I tore the front suspension apart to clean and paint some things and install new balljoints.

IMG_9843_zpsaa90a027.jpg

IMG_4181_zpsf1556354.jpg

IMG_6275_zps6b214fb2.jpg

New balljoints in.

IMG_1584_zps1658dd6c.jpg

I cleaned my springs and wrapped the bottoms with electrical tape.

Then I cut some stock springs to bring the rear end down after the first drive and hating the stance so much. The one on the right is one of the springs I used.

IMG_7559_zpsc32f0621.jpg

It sat pretty good, but not good enough. So UPR was called and I ordered coilovers front and rear.

IMG_5246_zpsd773a8eb.jpg

IMG_6062_zpsa95fdf8a.jpg

As you might have guessed, my top mounts were bottoming out on my coilover sleeve in the rear. This is how much suspension travel I had at this point.

IMG_2236_zps883278e4.jpg

%7Boption%7D

Then I polished up my True Forged wheels.

IMG_8036_zps47a30484.jpg

A buddy and I made some drop brackets for the rear end.

IMG_0012_zps102020f7.jpg

I got the drop brackets squared away and got the car sitting just as I want it to.

I picked up my Vortech. It came with an aftercooler setup, so I'm just going to run that instead of messing with an intercooler. The car this setup came off of made nearly 450RWHP, so I'm hoping to see something around 400.

IMG_9105_zps25cae754.jpg

IMG_1840_zps3eab385f.jpg

IMG_4272_zps945f2378.jpg

I also picked up a battery relocation kit.

IMG_6011_zps4cd85c1e.jpg

My Aeromotive 340 pump.

IMG_7274_zpse79220bd.jpg

And the battery box installed.

IMG_4046_zps208304bd.jpg

And the fuel pump installed and the tank back up.

IMG_3905_zps7a59571f.jpg

Installed my 03 Cobra shift knob

IMG_5639_zps8aee5bbf.jpg

Ran my wires for my battery relocation

IMG_4766_zpsb4028a58.jpg

Polished my head unit (first pic is after 100 grit, 220 grit, and using a grinder)

IMG_6392_zps9121d9c2.jpg

And 4 hours later

IMG_4182_zps1010d380.jpg

Before of the aftercooler

IMG_4272_zps945f2378.jpg

And after about 4 more hours. The pics make it look foggier than it looks in person.

IMG_5169_zps9f4d5431.jpg

And I couldn't resist sitting the Vortech under the hood lol

IMG_9010_zpsa82b63f9.jpg

Got my 42lb injectors

IMG_9053_zps930afb99.jpg

Put them in.

Stripped the finish off of the TB to aftercooler pipe.

IMG_8540_zpsf5918b5d.jpg

Painted the Powerpipe

IMG_1558_zps345cfd01.jpg

IMG_8272_zps7841ed6d.jpg

And got the blower mocked up.

IMG_7240_zpsa78a0f0f.jpg

IMG_1612_zps4e318f1a.jpg

IMG_0786_zps39da1dc9.jpg

Got the aftercooler a little bit more polished. Still not anywhere near being happy with it, but it will be ok for now.

IMG_3261_zpsc3684de2.jpg

I also put some carbon fiber wrap over the torn and chipped Vortech sticker on the side of the aftercooler.

IMG_1439_zps86c561ec.jpg

All mounted up

IMG_1607_zpsbf778247.jpg

IMG_8159_zpsda639ab1.jpg

Got the oil pan tapped

Finished up my battery box.

IMG_4386_zpsd53292b9.jpg

The finished routing of the oil drain and oil feed. Excuse how dirty everything looks, it's because of the flash lol

IMG_5057_zps20a44ef9.jpg

The coil pack relocation bracket

IMG_9322_zpsf93b6e2f.jpg

The water pump

IMG_6814_zps747e42d9.jpg

And the heat exchanger

IMG_9797_zpsce24dfbd.jpg

The big ole powerpipe

IMG_8114_zps88f234b9.jpg

IMG_1712_zpsed3151e2.jpg

Here's a finished shot of everything.

IMG_2050_zps26f93946.jpg

Nothing has changed on the car in the last few months. I've been driving it every now and then, but not much. I have clocked about 1500 miles since putting the Vortech on, so I figured it was time to check everything out. So, I got it into my dad's garage last weekend and inspected everything. I also cleaned the undercarriage a little.

Oil return line is still dry as can be

IMG_7742_zpsc0599047.jpg

Very light scraping, but not bad at all.

IMG_7730_zps9e12e369.jpg

The k-member brace has been scraped pretty good. But It's protected my oil pan great. It's still in mint shape.

IMG_7734_zps5afaf176.jpg

A non-leaking output shaft seal. This is the only one I've ever seen, lol

IMG_7727_zps075bcb79.jpg

The engine bay hasn't been cleaned since I got the car together, but it still looks ok.

IMG_7748_zps3e6e2f0b.jpg

IMG_7721_zpsa1c24922.jpg

I ordered a few little parts and have finally started receiving some of them.

FRPP floor mats, a Vortech license plate frame, and some 10-250 springs for the rear and some 10-375 springs for the front. Hopefully this will stiffen the car up and let me go a bunch lower. When I had it sitting halfway decent it had so much suspension travel that the k-member brace and exhaust would smack the ground over bumps.

IMG_7893_zpsdb81017b.jpg

IMG_7907_zps7bc2581e.jpg

Since it was about 4 degrees here today and school was closed (lol, yes they closed school for just the temperature) I decided to start on it.

IMG_7925_zpsbbf4c70e.jpg

Freakin disgustingly filthy TF wheels. I've got some Chemical Guys metal polish on the way that will hopefully make them shine a whole lot better.

IMG_7926_zpscc3682d0.jpg

I'm in love with that little blue lift...

And I'm in love with the girl in your sig... Lol

Rears torn apart

IMG_7928_zpsc6f1c662.jpg

The difference between a 10-150 and 10-250 is very obvious!

IMG_7929_zps79573581.jpg

Nasty brakes and fender liners

IMG_7930_zpse0ff5ba3.jpg

The drop brackets. I don't think I ever took a picture of them.

IMG_7933_zps98c2027c.jpg

Rears assembled and cleaned up.

IMG_7936_zps2deae726.jpg

The difference from a 10-175 and a 10-375.

IMG_7940_zpscab031c4.jpg

Fronts assembled and cleaned

IMG_7942_zpsfbeb3616.jpg

#rubbingprobs.

IMG_7944_zps9d67f35e.jpg

After dusting it off and quick detailing it. I've got some new Chemical Guys products I'm going to try on it. I'm hoping to get a great shine out of the old, tired paint.

IMG_7949_zpse15dfade.jpg

Calipers cleaned up a little

IMG_7950_zps9679be5a.jpg

Much better. I still need to dress the inner fenders, but they look much better by just cleaning them

IMG_7951_zpsd4c7cc32.jpg

Rears installed.

IMG_7952_zps4a6710a6.jpg

More to come this weekend.

Just read through this and hats off to you sir, you're doing some awesome work on this car! You have an eye for detail, which is the difference between a so-so build and one that breaks necks.

I feel you on the fender liner clearance problems lol, mine look like swiss cheese. I'm going to try to make a custom set for mine since it'll be sitting much lower than it ever did before, lol.

You probably already know this, but if you do end up finding a set of Fikses for this car, heads will explode at how fantastic it'll look.

car looks so amazing man, i would love those tf wheels.

what coilover kit do you for those tokico blues

Thanks man! I used the UPR coilover kit. It works great considering that Tokio Blues aren't supposed to be used with a coilover setup. I have no complaints so far!

The compliments mean a TON coming from you. Your car has truly inspired me to want to better my car, but I know there's no way mine could ever be in the same realm as yours. I hope that some day I will have fabrication skills like you have. Your work is amazing.

Holy cow! Never realized how much work was into your car. Especially for how young you are already. If you stick with the car for the long run this will be one of the most epic black sn95's out there!

Thanks for all of the compliments guys! Hopefully I can get back to work on the car tomorrow afternoon. I'm hoping to get my subframe connectors welded in Sunday as well as polish up my wheels, try out some new products from Chemical Guys on the paint, and get the car back on the ground.

Here's a pic of the detailing products. Sadly this is nearly $100 of products, lol.

Very nice and clean! You pay a lot of attention to detail (and it pays off!) and all the painting you do makes the car look brand new. Its true that a set of wheels greatly changes the look of a car and those Mach 5s are bitchin! They're easily one of the best five spoke wheels out there. The welds look great too but I'm definitely digging the current setup.

Or maybe I beat you to the punch and get the Fikses I am looking at.

Explain the lugs to me please? lol... Do you have extended wheel studs or is the whole thing for show? They look cool. Just don't understand the concept. I'm not real bright though, soooo.... Haha

I got my subframe connectors installed and got the car fully detailed. The Chemical guys products did amazing on the paint and the wheels!

Up on blocks

IMG_8002_zpsf73ec08b.jpg

IMG_8005_zps0b0a6897.jpg

And welded up and sprayed with a little bit of paint.

IMG_8025_zps84e76163.jpg

The floormats

IMG_8039_zps9e54e1ba.jpg

Plate bracket

IMG_8045_zpsbfcf2ab2.jpg

And a few pics of it on the road.

IMG_8064_zps2a70d082.jpg

IMG_8074_zps8637a204.jpg

IMG_8082_zps1a80d6b2.jpg

I've still got tons of ground clearance! I'm going to go lower in the front since the k-member wasn't smacking the ground over bumps since the springs are stiffer.

IMG_8090_zpsf8494c65.jpg

IMG_8088_zps6bfe7547.jpg

The reflections are now crystal clear.

IMG_8122_zpsbdab4bc0.jpg

And a quick idle/small rev vid because I was bored. The car was smoking like crazy because it had been sitting and it was cold outside.

PM me the link of where you got them if you don't mind! =]

Here ya go

Love the lug nuts. I have the same ones in blue. I have extended wheel studs in the rear so I needed an open ended, skinny lug nut and I really wanted something in blue. They're anodized aluminum. Seem to be pretty decent for the price.

Well, some big changes are going to be happening with this thing in the next few weeks.

Tuesday I took the car out and drove it about 100 miles. Then I pulled it into the garage and yanked all of the suspension out of it.

The last 2 pics of the car looking anything like this.

IMG_9586_zpsd9c0952b.jpg

IMG_9588_zpseaabc605.jpg

Suspension out.

IMG_9597_zps5f813987.jpg

The new hotness that I put in. Stock shocks/struts and cut foxbody springs.

IMG_9589_zpsed826aaf.jpg

What it looks like now. Bouncy AF and fugly to boot.
